Simplified guidance on EN 152288 parts 1 & 2.
EN 15288 1&2 has been prepared by the technical committee CEN/TC 136.
They shall be given the status of a nation standard (BS) by publication or by endorsement by March2009 and conflicting standards shall be withdrawn at the same time.
First published 31-01-09, however it does not maintain min. standards set down by PWTAG guidance, PAS39 and PAS65 HSG179, ect. and these should continue to be followed when applying EN15288.
Compliance with this EN BS does not automatically confer immunity from legal action. It would however be regarded as best advice available.
Does it affect our pool?
Answer if your pool is one of the below types
- Type 1 : A pool where water activities is the ,main business e.g. community pools, waterparks, etc.
- Type 2 : A pool which is an additional service to the main business, e.g. Hotel, holiday park, etc.
- Type 3 : All pools except Type 1 or 2 or private use. Therefore a pool serving more than 20 dwellings would be part of this type as would a school pool.

An experienced pool operator should be an integral member of the design team.
Take into consideration:
- Occupancy rates type one would typically be 1 bather per 3m2
- Users with disabilities
- Special installations e.g. risk of drowning, video supervision, etc.
- RAs for design construction and operations and these should be kept updated at fixed intervals.
- Special consideration shall be paid to the intended circulation routes
- Toilets and showers should be located at access to pool to encourage use before bathing
- Barefoot areas to be segregated from other areas
- Routes should avoid dangerous areas e.g. wave pools, deep water
- Non-swimmers, paddling pools should be segregated or placed at a suitable distance from pools with deeper water through barriers and/or distance
- Prevent unauthorised users from accessing plant staff rooms, etc by locking doors, consideration of supervision and signage
- Access to the pool should be via the shallow end.

- Pool depth signs should be in contrasting colour greater than 70mm in size.
- They should be prominently displayed (as a minimum):
- At access to pool
- In locations of min and max depths
- In middle in pools where there is a uniform slope
- Where there are abrupt changes of depth to a depth greater than 1.5m
- Additional information required to indicate;
- Diving areas
- Shallow and deep ends
- Non swimmers area
- All materials should be suitable for their selected use and able to endure pool type and hall conditions without encouraging bacteriological growth
- Avoid the use of stainless steel where stress corrosion could be a problem unless it can be inspected and kept clean.
- It should be of the recommended grade.
- General areas for bathers
- These are requirements for type 1 & 2 pools and recommendations for type 3 pools
- Avoid abrupt changes of levels in floors
- Single steps should have a height no greater than 250mm. With the riser not open less than 180mm
- Pool edges marked in contrasting cover
- Be slip resistant to relevant standards/Regs
- Ramps no greater than 8% although 5 to 6% is recommended
- Ramps should be slip resistant to relevant standards/Regs
- Staircases should comply with relevant standards/rags
- Be obviously marked at start and finish
- Circulation routes around pools should designed to ensure a free flow
- Service access should be separate from circulation route.
- Floors should have a suitable and effective drainage system that does not drain into pool. The floor should slope to the drains with an inclination between 2 & 5%.
- Emergency routes should follow relevant legislation but should cater for bare foot users.
- Dye testing at commissioning and then every five years
